I’m typically a storyteller and do not usually w I’m typically a storyteller and do not usually write topical essays. However, since Monday’s shooting at the Table Mesa King Soopers, I cannot erase or scratch away a deep sense of sadness and fear.

I’m not afraid of psychotic killers nor mad gunmen lurking in the dark. I’m afraid that these mass shootings have become so commonplace that we may become desensitized to their horrific effect. I’m also afraid that the most mundane and basic places in our lives: our kids’ schools, a movie theater, or our local grocery store, have become killing grounds. These are places that should be safe and not incite dread or fear.
I’m deeply saddened for the innocent victims and their families. It’s a great tragedy and each of the victims, like all of us, are connected to hundreds, if not thousands, of other people. Through these connections, we’ve all become ensnared in a web of senseless violence and share a sense of futility and loss.

I’m also sad and angry because I believe so many of these mass shootings are preventable.

I will remain burdened with my sense of sadness and fear. I will continue to let them simmer inside me like a stew continuing to reach its full flavor and fulfillment. I am left with the words from one of the first three songs I learned to play on the guitar when I was 11 years old: Pete Seeger’s “Where Have All The Flowers Gone? ” Peter, Paul and Mary famously sang this chorus: “Where have all the flowers gone long time passing, where have all the flowers gone long time ago; gone to graveyards everyone; when will we ever learn, when will we ever learn.” – Lyle R. Davis
